Miles Redd Stay with clear, clean colors. A happy room tends to have less in it. I don’t think you’re going to have many layers of curtains. I would stay with crisp, clean shapes, and one little ornamental piece. You have a boxy sofa, and a little curvy Louis XV slipper chair pulled up to it. It’s a juxtaposition of something crisp and something curvy.
Alexandra Stoddard I get all my color inspiration from nature. Clear, fresh colors, like sun yellow, and baby grass green, and pink that is mostly white with a drop of red. I love to paint ceilings the color of a clear-blue-sky day. But if you have pink walls, and painted the ceiling blue, the walls will turn purple. So if you have pink walls, you can paint the ceiling a pale green.
Jamie Drake Paint your bedroom Benjamin Moore Yellow Highlighter. It’s a bright yellow with a dash of red in it, so it goes a little bit towards the orange rather than a green. Paper a wall in Alpha Workshops’ bamboo pattern. It’s a stylized bamboo pattern, it’s not a realistic bamboo pattern. Drape your windows in a Lurex kissed fabric. It has tiny bits of Lurex in it, and has a little bit of shimmer and sheen. It’s from Pollack. Stain your floors deep raspberry, just for a touch of an unexpected pop.
Dennis Rolland I love painted floors; they can be done marbleized, white and black. Fabrics I feel strongly about. The clear colors will make you very happy. Use sensuous fabrics, like velvet. It can be a cotton velvet, it doesn’t have to be a silk velvet. In summertime, it’s fabulous to have very beautiful linens. I love summer slipcovers.
Jonathan Adler Orange is the most antidepressive color I can think of; it’s fresh, crisp and happy. And while we’re in the citrus family, I’ve never said no to lemon yellow or a dash of lime green. While I love color, I don’t think it should be used recklessly. If I were using chocolate brown, white and orange, I might do an ebonized wood floor, and a rug that’s white and orange, and maybe chocolate brown or wood furniture with orange accents. And white walls. I’m a big believer in chandeliers, and they should be bigger than you think you have room for, and a little more expensive than you think you can afford.
John Loecke Stick with the warm side of the color spectrum, like oranges, reds, yellows. Stay away from the blues, anything that is icy or cool feeling. What I do is paint the floor a color, and then paint a pattern on top of that. Another thing you can do with the floor is FLOR, squares of carpet, and you can mix and match.
